University of Minnesota Evans Scholars Chapter House member Jimmy Nguyen was named the 2021 Minnesota Golf Association’s Fritz Corrigan Evans Scholar of the Year at the MGA’s 121st Annual Awards Dinner, Nov. 1 at Oak Ridge Country Club in Hopkins. The MGA Fritz Corrigan Evans Scholar of the Year award is bestowed annually to the Evans Scholar from the University of Minnesota Evans Scholars Chapter House for outstanding achievement in academics, leadership and community service.

Jimmy Nguyen, 22, of Eden Prairie is a senior at the University of Minnesota studying Biochemistry, with a minor in business management. He caddied at Bearpath Golf & Country. Nguyen is a two-time executive board member and is currently serving as the Evans Scholars Chapter president. He works at the University’s Masonic Cancer Center in Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplantation. In addition, he is an operations team member at LifeTime Fitness. Photography, videography and personal fitness are among Nguyen’s hobbies, as he recently completed his second marathon in Long Island, N.Y., earlier this autumn. Nguyen served as the Chapter historian in 2019, executive vice president in 2020, and is known for his inspired leadership among his fellow chapter members. He plans a career in medical sales following graduation next spring.

The other two finalists were Colleen Danisz and Jacob Roy.

Colleen Danisz is a Senior at the University of Minnesota, majoring in Developmental Psychology with minors in Leadership and Integrative Neuroscience. She is a two-time Executive Board member, now serving her second term as the VP, Communications for our Minnesota chapter. She is currently interning with Ramsey Country Children’s Mental Health Collaborative providing services to struggling children and families. Last summer, she interned at the U of Illinois Chicago Hospital working with a Child Life Specialist. This inspired her decision to pursue a Masters in Child Life Specialty next year. She loves tennis and practices yoga. Colleen has left a remarkable imprint on our Evans Scholars House.

Jacob Roy is also a Senior at the University of Minnesota. Jacob is majoring in Computer Science. He has been working at Apple for the last two years and is planning to use his degree to pursue a career in the medical field or geographical information systems. Jacob was adopted from South Korea and has three sisters. He once made a robot out of Legos, that solved a Rubik’s cube. He serves on the Executive Board as the Administrative Vice President, helping to keep our Scholarship House in beautiful condition.

The Chick Evans Scholarship program is a four-year college scholarship for deserving caddies, sponsored by the Western Golf Association in association with the MGA. There are currently 1,070 Evans Scholars attending 21 universities around the country.

In 1996, the MGA renamed the Evans Scholar of the Year award in honor of Fritz Corrigan, a long-time supporter of the Evans Scholarship program who helped establish the Evans Scholars Chapter House at the University of Minnesota.
