Gopher Men Sixth after Day 1 at Gopher Invite

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – Posting a second-round team score of 282 Sunday, the University of Minnesota men’s golf team jumped six spots to sit in sixth place after two rounds of the 2021 Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
 
The University of Kansas holds a four-stroke lead over Michigan State University after two rounds of play, while the Spartans’ Bradley Smithson finished the first 36 holes of play with a share of the lead with the Jayhawks’ Luke Kluver at 5-under 137.
 
The Gophers were led by newcomer Antoine Sale, a junior transfer from Indian Hills Community College, who fired an opening-round bogey-free 67 Sunday before posting an even par 71 during Sunday’s afternoon session to finish the first two rounds tied for third at 4-under 138, one shot off the lead.
 
Junior Harrison Arnold bounced back from his opening-round 74 by shooting a 1-under 70 late Monday and stands seven shots back at 144 along with senior teammate Lincoln Johnson.
 
Ben Sigel, the  former Minnesota state high school Class AAA champion from Minnetonka, and now a junior at Kansas, followed a morning 71 with a 69 and is tied for 11th at 140, along with former Edina star Jack Ebner. Ebner, a senior at Miami (Ohio), reversed Sigel's rounds, shooting 69 in the morning and 71 in the afternoon. 

Iowa freshman Ian Meyer is another two strokes back at 142, after a pair of 71's. Meyer concluded his senior year at Minnetonka this spring by shooting 71-65--136 at Bunker Hills and finishing second in Class AAA at the state high school tournament.  
 
The 2021 Gopher Invitational concludes Monday with final-round tee times beginning at 7:15 a.m.
