CANNON FALLS, Minn. – Collecting at least one victory over the past nine seasons, four-time Minnesota Golf Association Player of the Year Trent Peterson took a big step in continuing his streak to a 10th season Saturday by posting a bogey-free 65 at Cannon Golf Club to take the opening-round lead at the 18th Minnesota Public Golf Association Mid Public Links Championship.

An eagle during his front nine Saturday propelled Peterson up the leaderboard before he carded four birdies during his final nine hole to take a five-stroke lead over two-time champion Justin Burleson to Sunday’s final round.

Peterson started the scoring Saturday by carding an eagle at the par-5 fourth hole and would turn in 3-under with his birdie at the ninth. A pair of early birdies during his back nine quickly put Peterson at 5-under for the championship and he would enter the clubhouse with a five-shot advantage after carding birdie on each of his final two holes to post a bogey-free 65.

The 35-year-old Peterson collected first win at the championship in 2020, winning on his home turf at Valleywood Golf Course. Burleson, winner in 2016 and again in 2018, carded three birdies during his front nine and closed out his round with back-to-back birdies at the 17th and 18th, but his round was hampered by a double-bogey at the par-5 13th to shoot a 2-under 70.

Recent MGA Mid-Players’ runner-up Ryan Conn fired a 1-under 71 Saturday and will begin Sunday’s final round tied for third with Devin Weberg, six shots back. The final round of the 18th MPGA Mid Public Links Championship is scheduled to begin at 9:10 a.m. Sunday at Cannon Golf Club.
