GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. – Following a bumpy start to his round at Theodore Wirth Golf Club Saturday, Augsburg University golfer Stellan Orvick carded three birdies over his final nine holes to card a 1-under 71 to grab the first-round lead at the 32nd Twin Cities Championship.
Orvick will take a three-stroke lead over 2018 champion Erik Bredesen Connor Herman to Sunday’s final round when the venue shifts to Hastings Golf Club.
On Saturday, traded a bogey with a birdie during his opening two holes before a pair of bogeys at the third and fifth holes put him at 2-over for the championship.
Orvick would turn in 1-over thanks to his second birdie of the round at the par-4 ninth. A steady Orvick tallied birdies at the 13th and 16th holes to take the clubhouse lead at 1-under 71.
Orvick posted 2-under 70 to open last year’s championship to take an identical three-stroke lead before carding an 8-over 80 during the final round at Hastings Golf Club to finish in second, two shots back of two-time champion Maxwell Fox.
Herman got off to a rough start Saturday by taking triple-bogey at the second, but would battle back by carding birdies at the sixth and eighth holes.
Slipping to 3-over for the round following a double-bogey at the 10th, Herman rallied once again by holing out for eagle at the par-4 15th to reach 1-over.
He finished with a bogey at the 16th to earn a share of second at 2-over 74. Bredesen, who claimed his first state title at Majestic Oaks five seasons ago, played his opening seven holes in even par before carding back-to-back bogeys to close out his front nine in 2-over.
He quickly recovered by sinking his birdie opportunity at the par-4 10th and remained at 1-over for his day until he recorded a bogey at the par-3 17th to finish in a share of second with Herman.
The final round of the 32nd Twin Cities Championship is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday at Hastings Golf Club.
