With His 3rd-Round 66, Holmgren Ties for Lead in 2nd Stage of Q-School

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- A month ago, Van Holmgren was on the outside looking in when he started the final round in the First Stage of PGA Tour/Korn Ferry Q-School.The top 20 finishers and ties were going to advance, but Holmgren wasn't even in the top 25 when the round began. He solved that problem by shooting a 5-under-par 65 at Lake Caroline GC in Madison, Miss., and made the top 20 with one stroke to spare at 268 (minus 12).

The 24-year-old former Minnesota State Amateur and State Open champion from Wayzata is making it easier on himself this week in the Second Stage of Q-School. On Thursday, he matched the low round of the day with a 6-under 66 at the Tesoro Club's Palmer Course, and as a result, he's tied for first with a 54-hole total of 209. Holmgren, who is 6 feet, 8 inches tall and hits a golf ball prodigious distances, rattled off three birdies in a row to conclude the front nine and sandwiched his only bogey of the round, which he made at the 214-yard, par-3 12th, between two more birdies at the par-5 11th (620 yards) and the par-4 13th. He also birdied the other par 5 on the back nine, the 502-yard 16th, and the 401-yard, par-4 18th.

He's tied with KK Limbhasut, a former Cal All-American from Thailand , and former University of Virginia star Danny Walker. Limbhasut shot 67, Walker 68. There is another three-way tie for fourth at 210. Brenden Jelley got there by matching Holmgren's 66. The two guys he's tied with, Kristoffer Ventura and Erik Compton, both shot 69s. Compton, who turned 44 last week, is a PGA Tour veteran who's played in 168 events, made more than $4 million -- and had two heart transplants, the first of them at age 12.

The top 15 finishers and ties will advance to the Final Stage of Q-School. It will be played at the TPC Sawgrass Valley and Sawgrass Country Club courses, and the top five finishers from there will get PGA Tour cards for 2024. Beyond that, anyone who qualifies for the Final Stage will have status on the Korn Ferry Tour (golf's top minor league) next year.

In addition to Holmgren, there is one other player with Minnesota connections in the top 15 with one round to go. Will Grevlos, a former Gopher from Sioux Falls, is tied for 13th at 214 after shooting 70 on Thursday. Holmgren is six strokes under the Magic Number so far, but Grevlos doesn't have much of a margin for error. He's one ahead of the five players who are tied for 15th at 215.

Another former Gopher, Angus Flanagan, the two-time Tapemark Charity Pro-Am champion and former State Open winner from England, got off to a bad start, with a 75 on Tuesday. But he's been working his way back into contention for advancement since then, with a 72 on Wednesday and a 70 on Thursday. That got him to within two of the top 15, and he has a history of playing well under pressure. In the final round of the 2022 Tapemark, he came from six behind by shooting a course-and-tournament record 10-under 61 at Southview CC and won the tournament by three shots. Two years before that, he wiped out a three-stroke deficit on the final day of the State Open to win by two with an 8-under 64 at Royal GC.

SECOOND STAGE

There are five Second Stage qualifiers being played from Nov. 14 to Dec. 1, and the top 15 finishers from each -- plus ties -- will advance to the Final Stage, which will be played in December in Ponte Vedra, Fla., at the TPC Sawgrass Valley Course and Sawgrass CC. Only the top five finishers from there will get PGA Tour status for 2024, but everyone who makes it to the Final Stage will have status on the Korn Ferry Tour next year.
