HOPKINS, Minn. – A pair of late birdies Wednesday lifted professional Scott McDonald to a victory over Eddie Wynne at the 53rd Minnesota PGA Match Play Championship at Oak Ridge Country Club.

Overcoming an early deficit, McDonald captured the lead with a birdie at the par-4 seventh and extended his lead to two by winning the 11th with a par.

Recording an eagle at the par-5 12th, McDonald’s lead swelled to three, but Wynne would make a late charge by winning the 13th and 14th holes to pull within one of McDonald.

McDonald would close out the championship by winning the 17th to earn the victory over Wynne, 2 and 1.

McDonald, from Minnewaska Golf Club, earns his second win of the season after claiming the Edinburgh USA Pro-Am in July.

Notching 17 top-10 finishes has translated into winnings of more than $17,000 in earnings for the 2022 season.

The 41-year-old McDonald has now collected at least one victory in each of the past three seasons.

Seeded No. 15 for the championship, McDonald began his run by ousting Bennett Smed, 3 and 2, during the Round of 64 before getting past Tim Vernon by the same margin during the Round of 32.

McDonald then edged three-time champion Jeff Sorenson during the Round of 16, 1 up, and followed it by knocking out 2018 champion Eric Rolland during the quarterfinal round, 2 and 1.

During the semifinal round, McDonald downed recent Minnesota PGA Professional champion Jonathan Reigstad, 3 and 2, to reach the final match against Wynne.

McDonald fell during the quarterfinals of last year’s championship, 3 and 2, to Mitchell Mackedanz.
